If you are unsure what needs to be done, or want feedback on your ideas regarding the task etc. feel free to drop a mail to the developer mailing list.
A task is taken? No problem, checking back with the assigned person(s) usually reveals where additional help could be used. Sometimes a task is practically abandoned, if that is the case, feel free to take over.
